Year 3/4: Egyptian Portraits

Having learned how to draw faces in profile, the children were ready to transfer their sketches to paper and add colour. They were working mainly in chalk pastel, which is not an easy medium to master, and throughout these lessons, I was impressed by the children's focus and determination to succeed at a challenging task.

I taught the children how to blend skin tones from a mixture of red , yellow and white chalks. They really enjoyed designing the collars and headdresses using examples of Egyptian art as a starting point:

These portraits have a lot of character.

There was great excitement when it was time to add gold and copper paint as a finishing touch!

Here are some of the very impressive finished versions. Well done, Year 3/4!
