Year 1 & 2: Paint and pastel technIques

Next week, we will be creating pictures inspired by the rocket paintings of Peter Thorpe.

As part of the preparation, the children spent this lesson experimenting with paint and chalk pastel. We learned which colours and materials worked well on a dark background, how to draw or paint an accurate circle, how to blend chalk pastel and new ways of applying paint using items found in the art studio.

Here are the Year 2s trying out different techniques:

The chalk pastel blending was really effective on the dark background.

Great art can rarely be created without a bit of mess but the children wore aprons and they really enjoyed the process of trying out the different media and techniques.

These practice pieces look wonderful and I can't wait to see how the children apply their newly acquired skills in their artwork next week.
